Why IIIT-Delhi for M.tech CSE?

Like you all aspirants of M.tech, I also had many questions last year.
This article here is an attempt to help you find answers for most of your questions.
All opinions are my own which may differ from others. These Q&A doesn't offer any promise from Institute's end. Please verify any fact, statistics or numbers from your end too.

My personal experience says that this is the best college I could have get at rank 1400. It is better than almost all NITs and new IITs. I left the job at an MNC and the package when resigned was 4.2 LPA.

Intially I was not sure whether my decision was right or not but after very few days in College I was sure that I will not regret my decision of leaving the job.
Lets start from the very first day. After joining formality a session was conducted in which seniors were present to answer any query. Seniors were and are very friendly. They will help you wherever possible. There was no ragging. Infact ragging is prohibited in institute. Environment is very good.
After few days in campus, there was technical fest. Fest/cultural programs and parties are very frequently organized.
Classes started. You have to choose 3-4 subjects out of 20 in a semester. Faculties are very nice and dedicated. One thing to make a note is that Do not join college if just want a degree. Be ready to work hard. In most of the subjects you will get atleast one assignment per week and then quiz every other week, mid term and end term and most of the subjects have projects. So in short its not like b.tech where we study one night before the exam and secure 70% marks. Here you have to be thorough , steady and continuous.
Internship opportunity starts right after first semester. If you opt for a long duration i.e. 6 months internship then you have to be here in college for one extra semester without any extra fee and you sit for placements in next year.
Stipend of 8k per month is provided, although you need to  give 10 hours per week for TA duty but generally work load is very less.
IIITD is best for academics and research. Placement is improving year after year. Those who wants to go for teaching there are some universities which visit the college for recruitment. Also there is a course "Effective teaching" which is offered to such students by Prof. Jalote. Join it if you are ready to work hard for 2 years and you will surely get a placement.

Most asked question is "Which one is better? IIITD, NSIT or DTU?"

I personally prefer IIITD.
IIITH > IIITD = IIITB > IIITA, IIITG, most of  NITs,
For more clarification I recommend this Thread
and A must read blog post.

  2. This should have been put up a bit early. I got rank 1100 in 2012 and was very demoralized after it. I was consistently getting rank 25-50 in the last 7-8 gateforums. So, I was planning to take gate again. But by some friends compulsion, I applied to IIITD. (did not apply to any other college). Although my friends with much lower rank took admission in IIITB, I preferred IIITD. (Just seeing the faculty and placements page). I would say IIITD=IIITH>IIITB. There are good placements in IIITB but academics is best in IIITD. Equally good or better in IIITD. Visit the faculty page and placements. Do not go to NITs (including top 3-4, I had friends at ACE repeating for gate from NITC lol) unless you want to mug up like B tech. I can say my decision was 100% right. I love my college (My B tech college was trash).

    1. Depends on your caliber. You get to sit in all good companies. Remaining depends on you. They will recruit just because Mr.X is an IITian or reject because Mr.Y is IIITian.

  4. This is a very good blog post, specially because there are very few such posts about IIITD on the internet. I'm joining the college for M. Tech. this year. I have few very specific questions. Please answer them.

    1. I've heard that few top software companies don't allow M. Tech. students to sit in their interviews. Is it true? If yes, please provide the names of such companies.

    2. Which top software companies visit the campus to offer internships to M. Tech. students (like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, etc) ? In which month does their interviews take place (end of first semester or any other months) and what is there CGPA/percentage criteria?

    3. I've heard that the academics are awesome. But the interviews of top software companies are too focused on algorithmic-coding. What facilities are provided in the college to allow students to prepare for such interviews? Are there any special classes?

    4. Are the academics of IIITD only research-oriented or are they focused on engineering/development as well? Is there any course related to UNIX/LINUX?

    5. What is the minimum and maximum number of courses that we need to undertake every semester?

    ReplyDelete

    1. 1) Hardly 1-2 and that too depends on their policy.
      2) Accenture Research Labs, Xerox and many startups. Interview for internship starts from mid of first semester.
      3) Yes. You are offered a course "Grad Algo", "Secure Coding". There are many other sessions conducted which focus on coding skills. Plus there are other Clubs which conduct coding competitions very frequently.
      4) Although mainly focused on research but few faculties take projects which are engineering development based. No such particular course based on Linux/Unix is offered.
      5) Minimum 3 , Max 4. Below or above this range you need to take special permission which is generally granted.

    2. Thanks for your quick reply. Looking forward to having you as a senior.

There is a lot of talk that Google, Microsoft have been coming for placements but students haven't been able to clear the interviews (specially M. Tech. students). Is it true?
If its true, then what do you think is the reason behind this. As a senior, what would you advise me and other new M. Tech. students to do from the very beginning so that we may clear the interviews of these dream companies? Should we start preparing for the interviews from the beginning alongside course-work? What should be the strategy?

What other things would you suggest to the new admits that would enable us to make the best out of IIITD?

      Delete
    3. Main reason is Lack of coding skills. Thats why now they are focusing more onto it. They are conducting courses, classes and session which focus on coding part only.

    1. 1. I would choose IIITD. Everyone have different requirements. I think IIITH do not offer stipend.
      2. This link have it all -> http://iiitd.ac.in/placement/stats
      3. visit above link and decide yourself.
      4. visit above link and decide yourself.
      5. They have no problem in recruiting if you are able to crack their rounds. Why would any company visit the campus if they do not want to recruit. They want to , provided you are worthy enough.
      6. IIITH > IIITD > DTU
      7. Better placement. Focus more on coding which help in placements. While iiitd focus on research and academics. Choose according to your requirement.

  8. Which is the best specialization at IIIT delhi in terms of faculty, facilities and placements?

Do companies discriminate between specializations during placements, i.e. some specialization is more preferred and others are not by the companies? I have heard that some companies allow only general CS candidates and not specialized ones. Is it true?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. All specializations are equally good. Choice should be made based on interest. Companies do not discriminate based on specialization.
No, whatever you have heard is not true.

    2. What type of projects are done in the second year? Is the project focused on developing some softwares or is it focused on writing a paper?
I don't want to go into PhD but want to become a very good engineer. Should I do M.Tech at IIITD?

      Delete
    3. its totally your choice what kind of projects you want to take. Generally 2nd year M.tech students focus on Thesis but additionally they can take subjects which have projects in their course structure.

Ofcourse you should join IIITD. You will get all the opportunities here for whatever you want to be. Be it a coder/programmer or be it a researcher.

  11. Hello GATE Aspirants

The primary aim is to coach the learners for gate coaching online to get the best results. Getting started with online lectures for gate preparation is the best option since it is considered to be the convenient way for GATE planning.
