Installing Ubuntu 12.04 on Windows Machine.

Ubuntu is one of the most popular Linux flavor. Release 12.04 have support till April 2017. Here are steps on how to install it on your window machine. Official website links are provided for help.

Ubuntu can be installed in 3 ways.

1. Install the Wubi in your windows and then install the Ubuntu just like any other application. Download the Wubi.exe(2.5 MB) from here.

2. Using a bootable pen drive.

2. Using a CD disk.

How to make a Pen Drive Linux Bootable.

0. Download an ISO image of Ubuntu 12.04 (oh yes it is step zero)

1. Download the Lili (4.8 MB) , Linux live USB creator.
2. Install it on your window machine.
3. Stick your Pen Drive in USB port and run Lili. It will start reading drive lists.
4. In the first drop down choose your pen drive.
5. Select the ISO file which was downloaded in step zero. Most probably in your  downloads folder.
6. Persistent data part, leave it as it is.
7. Check all the checkbox. Specially the one which says format the pen drive.
8. Click the lightning icon. Here you go. It will take roughly 15-20 minutes.

How to install using a bootable pen drive.

1. Now when your pen drive is bootable, you are ready to install the Ubuntu. First thing you need to do is to make space for it.

Best practice is to give it a separate space, instead of space in C:\ drive.
Empty one of your drive or shrink one and make an empty space of around 25 GB or whatever size you want according to your need and availability of space.

2. Stick pen drive in USB port and restart the system.

3. While system boots up press the you-know-which key to enter the BIOS setup or Boot Option. (Most likely keys are f9 , f12, esc). A list of such keys, in case you don't know for your machine, is given here. Or a better solution is to google your model and find out.

4. Lets assume now you are in boot menu. Using the F5/F6 keys move the 'USB Key' option to the top of the list. Press F10 to save and exit the boot setup. Now your system boots with the OS residing in pen drive.

5. Now most probably , if everything goes ok - like USB is being detected or USB was made bootable properly or USB booting option is enabled , you will get options to 'Try Ubuntu' and 'Install Ubuntu'.

6. Select the Install Ubuntu option and Follow these steps.

7. In step 4 at the above given link, you get three options. Install Ubuntu alongside windows, which is default option and instructions are given on the same page. Second option is replace Windows with Ubuntu. I don't think you want this. So we will proceed with 3rd option. Something else.

8. Select radio button 'something else'. Proceed.

9. On the next UI, which look somehow frightening to new Linux users, all partitions are listed. Identify the partition which you kept aside for Ubuntu in step 1. Select this partition and click the delete button. (A minus button in case of Ubuntu 13.04). The partition will be deleted. Lets say the free space is 50 GB.

10. Select the free space (Just made out after deleting partition). and click the 'add' button ( + for Ubuntu 13.04).

11. On the next UI fill the size of the partition we are going to make. Lets say 17GB ( approx 17000 MB) out of 50 GB.

Select the File System type as 'Ext4'
Select the mount point as root i.e. a slash ( / ) from dropdown.
Proceed.

12. Now free space will be around (50GB - 17 GB = 33 GB) 33000 MB. Select this free space. Click 'add' button.

Fill the size as 4 GB (approx 4000MB) if RAM size is less than or equal to 4 GB , if RAM size is more than this step is not required. Or if still want to go with Swap space take just 2 GB.
Select the File System type as 'Swap'.
Proceed.

13. (optional) Select the remaining free space. Click 'add' button.

Fill the size 300 MB (Yes just 300 MB).
Select file system type as 'Ext4'.
Select the mount point as '/boot'.
Proceed.

14. (optional : make a bigger / [root] partition only : recommended) select the remaining space. click the 'add' button.

Fill the size - actually do nothing. It will automatically take the remaining space size.
Select the File system type 'ext4'.
select the mount point as '/home'.
Proceed.

15. Click the 'Install' button at the bottom. And rest of the things are same as given from step 6 at this link.

If stuck somewhere in the middle, either ask Ubuntu or ask me ;)

How to install using CD.

Get a Ubuntu CD. Put in optical drive and restart the system. Just like in case of bootable pen drive, enter the boot option and choose 'CD-ROM Drive' option. Proceed. Rest of the things are same.

happy Learning :)
